Hot Stone Massage
Smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of Your body. The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat.
The knowledge about the use of hot stones in a therapeutic sense, dates back 5000 years. The stones themselves are formed from volcanic rock (yup – lava!) giving them high iron and magnesium content, which allows them to retain heat longer. The stones are heated in a professional cooker to a temperature of 40 – 45 degrees Celsius. During the massage You will have a thin sheet over your body on which the stones are placed, to prevent burns. The heat from the stones as well as the pressure provide a relaxing and calming feeling to your body. In addition to placed stones, parts of the body are massaged using (lots of) oil, Swedish massage techniques with and without stones in hand.
The warmth is soothing for people who tend to feel chilly. The heat of the stones relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist to work deeper while using lighter pressure. People often describe hot stone massage as comforting and deeply relaxing.
